I am the Creative Director at Reading Room Manchester and have a relentless desire to improve user experience, performance optimisation and mobile technology interaction.

I have 15+ years experience in the digital industry working and leading teams for creating designs, concepts, strategies and innovative digital experiences for websites and mobile web apps, winning numerous awards and garnering notable press mentions along the way.

Never shy to ask the obvious overlooked questions and I am equally confident presenting to clients as I am pulling an all nighter with the tech team to get a project over the line.

In my down time when i'm not dual screening, I can be found tinkering with gadgets which usaully ends up with a soldering iron "improvement".

Lab

What started off as a quick way to store code snippets, the labs section has become a diverse set of practical examples for developers, with no fuss or extra code, just the minimum to demonstrate the technique.

Plugins, custom code, thought experiments, it's all in there and growing constantly.

MOSI

Mental health research through gamification

Challenge

Gather data as the basis for scientific reasearch in understanding mental health, especially Parkinsons Disease.

Solutuon

Suggesting a gamified approach, I created a number of technical demonstrations on each aspect of the games playability and on-site beta testing was performed at Museum of Science and Industry. I advised against a dedicated app as reaching a larger audience base through all modern browsers would increase the statistical yield.

Lavendon

Unify global brand & increase self serve

Challenge

Competitor analysis showed a more connected and co-ordinated market, detracting from Lavendon, the brand leader.

Solutuon

I ran a number of brand workshops to reduce international brand confusion and constructed enhanced depot functionality when choosing hire equipment through UX driven interactive tools.

Responsive design flexibility was paramount with a diverse international language set.

Manchester Art Gallery

Design refresh & integration

Challenge

Visitor and analytics research revealed poor web usage and facilities confusion.

Solutuon

Integrating into the parent design of University of Manchester reduced development budgets and I focused the project on surfacing the gallery's facilities through UX workshops.

Pattern library & high performance

Challenge

Simplify and unify the University's brand while offering faculty flexibility.

Solutuon

Working as part of a multi-agency team, I created a mobile first pattern library that allowed future proof flexibility for designs not even conceived.

As a Russell Group University, brand, international browser support (IE7) and high web performance were key metrics.

National Football Museum

Museum & e-commerce refresh and integration

Challenge

Dramatically increase coversion and extend the new design to the e-commerce sub site.

Solutuon

I introduced the concept of user generated museum collections to be shown alongside the existing online exhibitions.

Completing the ecommerce project ahead of the museum presented an interesting range of design discussions.

Increase coversion to call centre

Challenge

Competitor analysis revealed a step change in simplification to educational holiday planning for time starved teachers.

Solutuon

I oversaw the refresh of the site design and worked to significantly reduced page loading times, whilst introducing high performance video content as the primary advertising driver, identified through branding workshops as a key metric for competitive differentiation.

High performance event driven e-commerce

Challenge

Refresh the current site design and significantly reduce page loading times to maiximise coversion for high traffic events.

Solutuon

Without compromising the flexibility of the shopping experience in a very competitive and financially high yield market , I focussed extensively on performance throughout the prototype development stage. Through extensive UX testing, I ensured that ahead of it's competitors, a mobile accessories site was fully usable on a mobile device, where an inverse Pareto Principle was at play for sales to visitors.

Market share & new audiences

Challenge

Simplify conversion and ensure new audiences and technologies are being maximised for growth. Creators of day based car insurance, the exiting insurers had diversified and encroached into it's market.

Solutuon

I Introduced a new web branding strategy using 2D characters and animation to offer future campaigns.

I optimised the design for conversion, re-prioritising information flow and worked with the in-house dev team on their internal systems.
